TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD) – Arizona sheriff’s deputies took a suspect into custody after what they called an “unprovoked” shooting at a store selling recreational vehicles.

Deputies from the Cochise County Sheriff responded to a shooting on the Desert RV in Whetstone around 5:15 p.m. Monday. The suspect, a 37-year-old military veteran, entered the store armed with two AR-15 rifles and opened fire, prompting the owner to return fire, they said.

The suspect shot and killed two employees before fleeing into the desert. One person died and another was seriously injured, KOLD reported.

Authorities said they had identified the suspect, but did not release his name. They said the man entered the desert RV twice earlier in the day but was not behaving unusually. No one recognized him.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies rushed to the scene.

An active lockdown was in place for a 4-mile radius around the area, and Highway 90 to Sierra Vista was closed as deputies searched for the suspect. These restrictions have been removed.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call 911.
