A new study suggests that ingredients in whiskey may benefit skin health.

national drink Scottish By-products can be used in skin care products to improve the appearance of the skin.

This includes reducing inflammation and puffiness, calming redness, and fighting free radical damage from the environment.

Research from the Robert Gordon University (RGU) School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences in Aberdeen has found that canned beer – a residue from the making of whiskey used for animal feed – has antioxidant properties in skin care products effect.

Incorporating nutrients and polyphenols from whiskey into skin care products was a key element of their research.

Scientists believe this is the first time whiskey by-products have been used to study the antioxidant capacity of cells.

Inverness natural skincare company Zaza & Cruz took part in the research and now uses the ingredient in their products.

Company founder Rebecca Hastings obtained samples for testing from a local distillery in the highland town of Dingwall after receiving multiple rejections elsewhere.

Research at RGU was originally inspired by the beneficial effects on the skin of the sake yeast fermentation process, which was demonstrated by a Japanese company in the 1970s.

Carlos Fernandez, RGU Senior Lecturer and lead researcher on the project, said: “The RGU team has an excellent partnership with Zaza & Cruz, as reflected in two successful research projects investigating the antioxidant properties of whiskey beer for health functional product.”

Ms Hastings said the experiment helped her business “look into the future”.

She added: “The experience of the RGU team has helped me, as a business owner in my field, feel confident in the results they can generate with their research facilities.”
