Week 3 proved to be a big time for college football’s top 10 teams. Do not. On Saturday night, 7 USC went 3-0 to a 45-17 victory over Fresno State in Lincoln Riley’s first season in a powerful all-around offense. Quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns, while running backs Travis Dye and Austin Jones each scored touchdowns and had more than 100 yards on the ground. The fiery start of Riley’s tenure marked the first time USC has scored at least 40 points in its first three games of the season since 2005 — the year the Trojans competed for the national championship in Texas.
Fresno State star quarterback Jack Heiner had to be ejected after suffering a leg injury after being fired by USC’s Solomon Bird early in the third quarter. The Bulldogs were down just 21-10 at the time, but losing the All-West performer proved an insurmountable loss.
While USC’s performance was impressive, Saturday’s top 10 team’s best offensive performance belonged to No. 10. 3 Ohio. In a 77-21 win over Toledo, the Buckeyes advanced for a total of 763 yards — second most in school history — and had 36 first drives. Quarterback CJ Stroud threw five touchdowns, and receivers Emeka Egbuka, Jayden Ballard and Marvin Harrison Jr. caught every 100-plus yards.
