A man has been killed after his dog leash was caught by a train door at a station in Virginia, US, after he was dragged off the platform.

The victim, identified by family members as Harold Riley, 50, disembarked from the train earlier this week and stood on the platform with his dog attached to it, Metro transit police said. Inside.

He was dragged along the platform onto the tracks.

Mr Riley was pronounced dead at hospital.

He is survived by four grandchildren, his two daughters told Sky News affiliate NBC Washington.

Metro Transit Police said the dog did not appear to be a service animal, but Mr Riley’s daughters said the dog, named Daisy, was wearing her service vest.

Pets are not allowed on board unless they are in a transport container or if they are service animals.

The dog was taken into police care, but Mr Riley’s daughter Olivia Stark told FOX 5 she picked her up from the shelter and found a family to adopt her.

Metro traffic police said they were investigating the accident.

It said train operators carried out two security door checks before leaving the platform.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the deceased,” the force said.
