GTA 6: Huge leak of next Grand Theft Auto ‘won’t affect game development’ | Tech News

The publisher’s CEO says the leak of a slew of early footage of the next-gen Grand Theft Auto won’t affect the game’s development.

It was one of the most high-profile cybersecurity breaches in the history of the industry, with dozens of videos showing various robberies, shootouts and open-world driving Posted to online message boards in September.

The incident led Rockstar, the series’ notorious secretive developer, to be forced to issue a statement acknowledging “a cyber intrusion by an unauthorized third party to illegally access and download confidential information from our systems.”

Rockstar said it was “very disappointed” to share details about the next GTA “in this way” after nearly a decade of speculation about the game.

On publisher Take-Two’s second-quarter earnings call reported by VGC, CEO Strauss Zelnick said: “Regarding the leak, it’s very unfortunate, and we do take things like this very seriously.

“There’s no evidence of any physical assets being stolen, which is a good thing, and the leak certainly doesn’t have any impact on development or anything like that.

“But it’s very disappointing and it makes us more vigilant about issues related to cybersecurity.”

The video appears to confirm previous reports that GTA 6 will be set in Sin City, a fictional representation of Miami in previous games.

The game will feature two protagonists in a Bonnie and Clyde-esque story, including the first playable female characters in series history, reports say.

Given the already long wait, fans will be relieved to hear that the leak won’t affect development. This is the biggest gap between new releases since the GTA series began in 1997.

The last game, which has now sold more than 170 million copies worldwide, was revealed on Take Two’s earnings call, thanks to its re-release on current-gen consoles earlier this year.
