Let go of the Labrador Retriever, a new top dog has taken the lead! The breed has lost its crown after 31 years as America’s most popular dog breed, according to the American Kennel Club.
Dethroned 30 years later, Americans now prefer ‘fun’ and ‘adaptable’ French Bulldog.
strong and funny face animal has become a favorite of many – as the club announced the winners on Wednesday.
“The popularity of the French bulldog has exploded over the years, and for good reason,” said Gina DiNardo, the club’s executive secretary.
It may come as a surprise to many that the Labrador Retriever has topped the list for so long, but the French Bulldog has been slowly making its way to the top.
The Frenchman has risen from No. 14 in 2012 to No. 1 by 2022, the club said, adding that registrations of new cute animals had increased by “more than 1,000 percent” during that period.
Could a French Bulldog Make the Perfect Companion?
“The French are playful, adaptable, loyal and outgoing.
“They make great companions for all kinds of people, but it’s important to do your research, not only to find a breed that suits your lifestyle, but also to make sure you’re getting a thoroughbred dog from a responsible breeder,” Ms. DiNardo added.
Other breeds are also climbing, including the American Hairless Terrier, Gordon Setter, Italian Greyhound and Anatolian Shepherd, according to the club.

Although this perky-eared breed has knocked the Labrador Retriever out of its roost, these Frenchies get a lot of criticism and attention in some cases.
In 2017, the British Veterinary Association issued a statement saying, “Potential owners are strongly advised not to purchase brachycephalic breeds; instead, we encourage potential owners to speak with a local veterinarian before purchasing a dog to better understand what breed is best for them, learn more About responsible ownership and how to better understand your dog’s needs”.
Brachycephalic breeds are flat-faced breeds such as pugs, bulldogs, and French bulldogs. The British Veterinary Association said the dogs may have a shorter skull shape, which gives them a flattened appearance.
Other animals are also affected by brachycephaly; these species include dogs, cats, and rabbits, among others.
Many health deficiencies accompany brachycephaly, such as difficulty breathing, eye disease, natural childbirth, skin infections, and dental problems.
According to pet supply company VioVet, the French Bulldog’s weaknesses are visual impairment and cherry eyes; however, the animal is known to have a poised and relaxed temperament.
The site also notes that the Frenchman has shown “loyalty and devotion to his owner and family while fearlessly protecting his loved ones when he perceives a threat”.
