Ohio state and business community express support for Appalachian Regional Center for Clean Hydrogen (ARCH2) to join Battelle and major energy and technology companies

Columbus, Ohio, December 8, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Battelle is leading a powerful industry consortium called ARCH2 in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky to bring together producers, end users, world-class Technologists and necessary infrastructure come together to advance use and delivery of produced hydrogen in Appalachia.

Ohio now joins West Virginia, EQT Corporation, the nation’s largest natural gas producer, Battelle and GTI Energy, both of which have deep expertise executing clean energy plans for the federal government, and West Virginia’s leading Allegheny Technology (AST) energy technology consultancy unsolicited.

“Ohio continues to support efforts to lead in innovation in new technologies, including the clean hydrogen market,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “My administration will continue to support these efforts so Ohioans can share in the benefits of hydrogen energy development as part of the nation’s long-term energy strategy.”

ARCH2 is expected to be a significant economic and environmental investment that will benefit the entire Appalachian region. The region is an ideal location for a clean hydrogen hub because of its unique access to ample low-cost natural gas feedstock, end-user demand, labor and technical capabilities, and carbon sequestration potential.

“ARCH2 will be a critical foundational component in America’s transition to decarbonization, and we thank the DeWine administration and business leaders across the state for their support,” said Battelle President and CEO Lou Von Thaer.

“The Ohio Chamber of Commerce is proud to support the proposal to fund ARCH2,” said Ohio Chamber CEO Steve Stivers. “Because of our abundance of natural resources and manufacturing opportunities, Ohio expands ARCH2’s impact as a clean hydrogen hub. Converting carbon emissions to hydrogen is critical to our efforts to have reliable and clean energy and establishes the Buckeye State as a leader in hydrogen energy are crucial. The next generation of hydrogen jobs.”

The Appalachian region provides significant existing resources for ARCH2, including critical infrastructure needed for low-cost natural gas production and storage, existing pipeline and transportation networks, rapid end-use markets in the Appalachian region, and proximity to Aba Latvia end-use market locations are Midwest and Northeast. The region also has a highly skilled energy workforce — and support from labor organizations, environmental nonprofits, academic institutions, and community stakeholders — all of which will be integral to project development and associated job retention and creation , especially in disadvantaged and underserved communities.

“As energy technology advances rapidly, so does our energy infrastructure, which is critical to Ohio’s workforce and economy. The ARCH2 Hydrogen Hub is the key to diversifying our energy mix and using clean energy to achieve this A perfect example of purpose,” said Pat Tiberi, president and CEO of the Ohio Business Roundtable. “I applaud Governor DeWine’s administration for its support of this project, and Battelle’s leadership in convening this partnership to ensure Ohio remains a leader in innovative technology.”

“Ohio ranks first in the Midwest for the diversity of manufacturing industries that can utilize hydrogen as a fuel source, and Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania lead the nation in natural gas production,” said JP Nauseef, JobsOhio President and CEO. “Collaborations with Ohio companies have led to generations of world-changing innovation, making Ohio the ideal destination for this hydrogen hub.”

The ARCH2 team, comprised of entities operating in Appalachia and spanning the hydrogen value chain, as well as energy technology organizations, including the National Energy Technology Laboratory, consultants, academic institutions, community organizations and NGOs, will provide commercial, technical and program leadership for center development and expansion.

Additional support came from leaders of the Ohio Alliance of Clean Hydrogen Hubs (OH2Hub), which announced in October that it would be actively involved in establishing and securing funding for ARCH2. OH2Hub includes 200 public and private entities.
