Padre Island National Seashore closed its driving beaches due to Hurricane Ian.

The National Seashore is closed to traffic from 5 p.m. Monday. Hurricane Ian will enter the Gulf of Mexico in the next few days after making landfall in Cuba as a Category 3 storm on Tuesday, according to PINS. Forecasters warned that Ian could hit Florida as a Category 4 storm as early as Wednesday, The Weather Channel reported.

“The National Weather Service Corpus Christi office is forecasting surf heights to increase to 6 to 8 feet between Tuesday and Thursday, and 10 to 12 feet before receding Thursday night,” PINS wrote in a social media post. “As wave heights increase, so are coastal flooding at the bottom of the dune line, as well as rip currents.”

Driving beaches on barrier islands will reopen once the risk of coastal flooding has subsided and the beaches have been determined to be safe to drive on, PINS wrote.
