Popular Louisville fruit market moves east as part of new business strategy
A local grocer is introducing a new business strategy, starting with relocating one of its stores, according to Louisville Business First. Paul’s Fruit Market plans to relocate its current store at 4946 Brownsboro Road to a new building at 4966 US 42. Moving on, but director of operations Ben Coomes said the new space will allow the long-established Louisville grocer to introduce a new way of doing business. “We’ve been working in the existing store, I think it’s been close to 50 years,” Coomes said. “We’ve just added so many things that we’re kind of running out of space.” Combs said the store started out selling just produce but has since added deli, gourmet food, gift baskets, plants, catering and more Products. With the new location, Paul’s will add more options, such as prepared food kits and delivery options. It will also have covered parking. Paul’s Fruit Market has four retail locations in Louisville: Brownsboro Road, Taylorsville Road, Chenoweth Lane and Shelbyville Road. Most stores are around 5,000 to 6,000 square feet, Coomes said. Its larger plan of 42 new US stores allows the company to change its layout and introduce new products. “In a sense, it’s a prototype,” Coomes said. “This is the first store where we really took the time to say, ‘We’re not fit for this anymore. What the hell is our business model? Is there anything we want to change? What do we want to be doing in the next 20 years?'” says Combs, The store is expected to open in the fall. The Brownsboro location will remain open until the new grocery is up and running. Paul’s Fruit Market is planning to move its current store at 4946 Brownsboro Road to a new building at 4966 US 42. It’s only moving down the road, but director of operations Ben Coomes said the new space will allow the long-running Louisville grocer to launch a new business approach.
“We’ve been in that existing store for a long time, I think it’s been close to 50 years,” Coomes said. “We’ve just added so much stuff that we’ve outgrown the space.”
