Actor Tom Sizemore is in critical condition after suffering a brain aneurysm.

The 61-year-old suffered an aneurysm at his Los Angeles home around 2 a.m. Saturday, his agent, Charles Lago, said.

The actor is in intensive care in hospital, with Mr Lago describing the situation as “wait and see”.

Sizemore is best known for his roles as a sergeant next to Tom Hanks in the 1998 World War II epic Saving Private Ryan and as commander of an Army Ranger battalion in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down.

He also starred in the 1995 crime drama Heat and was nominated for a 2000 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for his role in Witness Protection.

Sizemore has battled drug addiction throughout his acting career, having been arrested multiple times for DUI and drug possession.

Three years after he was convicted of domestic violence against his girlfriend Heidi Fleiss in 2003, he pleaded guilty to smoking methamphetamine outside a motel.

He was arrested in 2009 and 2011 on suspicion of beating a former spouse.
