Steady growth in Leavenworth Street corridor

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – Elmwood Pharmacy is somewhat back where it started 25 years ago.

The pharmacy was originally located behind the old Wohlner grocery store—then it moved around the corner to share space with a medical clinic.

“The opportunity to go back into the building and renovate it as a dispensary took a long time to get there, but over the last 10 or 12 years we’ve really outgrown the space we’re in,” said Jeff Kilborn of Elmwood Pharmacy.

Now Kilburn and his pharmacy have a lot of cream. Not only did his dispensary grow—the community itself began to grow. There’s a pizzeria next door and more housing is being built on Leavenworth Street near Elmwood Park.

“It’s row houses, 20 units,” said Brester Construction principal Joe Recker. “They’re not renting out, they’re selling … two-bedroom units over three floors.”

A new home and business helped Jeff make the decision to stay nearby.

“Knowing that Noddle Group was going to develop something out west, knowing that UNMC was going east, we thought it was a great opportunity for us to continue to be an independent community pharmacy and take a place that I’ve never been before, said Kilburn.

Jeff also wants more businesses to move into the area—perhaps replacing the landmark restaurant Gerda’s Bakery across the street.

Traffic to the pharmacy has been good so far, he said. He wants business to continue to grow in the nearby area, where his dispensary has been in business for a quarter of a century.

There is also more growth on the east end of Leavenworth. The Omaha City Council recently approved the demolition of a building near 30th and Leavenworth to make way for a four-story apartment building.
