Composer Angelo Badalamenti, known for writing scores for director David Lynch’s TV and film blockbusters like ‘Twin Peaks’ and ‘Blue Velvet’, dies .

The classically trained Grammy winner died at his home in New Jersey, USA. He is 85 years old.

Badalamenti composed haunting and ethereal musical accompaniments to many of Lynch’s compositions, including Wild at Heart, Fire Walk With Me, Lost Highway, The Straight Story and Mulholland Drive.

He also played coffee-loving gangster Luigi Castigliane in Mulholland Drive and played piano with Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet.

“The composer, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away on Dec. 11 … he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family,” his family said in a statement.

Badalamenti’s breakthrough came when he was the singing coach of Rossellini’s song “Blue Velvet” in the 1986 film of the same name.

After scoring scores for a number of mainstream films including A Nightmare on Elm Street: Fantasy Warrior and National Lampoon’s Christmas Break, Badalamenti reunited with Lynch on the hit TV show Twin Peaks. It quickly became his most famous soundtrack and defined the style and mood of the show.

During his long career, he has worked with eclectic singers of almost every genre, including David Bowie, Nina Simon, Mrs. Shirley Basie, Patti Austin, Paul McCartney Jazz, Liza Minnelli, Pet Shop Boys Roberta Flack and LL Cool J.

New York-born Badalamenti won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1990 for the theme Two Peaks.

He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2008 World Soundtrack Awards and in 2011 received the prestigious Henry Mancini Award presented by Lynch.
