Jill Biden has given her strongest hint yet that President Joe Biden will run for re-election – saying there is “almost” nothing left to do but determine when and where the announcement will be made.

Speaking in Nairobi, the second and final stop of her five-day African tour, Mrs Biden said: “How many times does he have to say it before you believe it?”

She added: “He said he wasn’t done. He wasn’t done with what he started. That’s what matters.”

Accompanying granddaughter Naomi Biden cheered the first lady’s comments after an exclusive interview.

“Preach Nana,” she tweeted.

Hours later, Mr. Biden laughed when told of his wife’s comments in an interview with ABC News.

He said: “God loves her. Look, what I said is true, I have other things to get done before I start my full campaign.”

According to Biden aides, the announcement could come in April after the first fundraising quarter is over, just as President Barack Obama is officially launching his re-election campaign.

The first lady has long been touted as a key figure in Biden’s orbit as he charts his future, though he dodged questions about whether she had the deciding vote on whether he would run for re-election.

“Of course he listens to me because we’re a married couple,” she said.

However, she later added, “trust me, he made up his own mind”.

The first lady’s interview, which took place on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, recalled a trip to the country last May to meet first lady Olena Zelenska of the besieged country.

Mrs. Biden also spoke extensively for the first time about her skin cancer diagnosiswhich led to doctors removing multiple basal cell lesions in January.

“I thought, oh, it’s just something on my eye, you know,” she said. “But then they said, no, we think it’s basal cells.”

She said doctors then examined her breasts and said, “It’s definitely basal cells”.

“So I’m lucky,” the first lady added.

Mrs. Biden is the only first lady to have continued her career in addition to her ceremonial duties, teaching writing and English to community college students.

And at 71, she says she’s not ready to think about retirement.

“I knew I’d know when enough was enough,” she said.

“But not yet.”
